The lower the gauge metal number, the thicker the metal pipe will be. More thickness equals more durability.

The lower the gauge, the longer your stove pipe will last before replacement. You want to aim for a 24-gauge or thicker pipe for stovepipe connections 6" in diameter or bigger.
